PayPal has entered into a strategic partnership with OpenAI to integrate its digital wallet into ChatGPT, a move that could redefine how consumers and merchants interact in the digital marketplace.

The fintech giant confirmed the agreement to CNBC, revealing that the collaboration will allow users to make purchases and payments directly within ChatGPT starting next year. The integration will enable consumers to buy products through the AI platform, while merchants can seamlessly list their inventory for sale.

According to Alex Chriss, PayPal’s Chief Executive Officer, the deal represents a major step toward the future of AI-driven commerce.

“We’ve got hundreds of millions of loyal PayPal wallet holders who now will be able to click the ‘Buy with PayPal’ button on ChatGPT and have a safe and secure checkout experience,” Chriss said.

Expanding AI-Powered E-Commerce

The development follows OpenAI’s introduction of Instant Checkout, a new feature in ChatGPT that allows users in the United States to search for and pay for products directly within the chat interface. The feature currently supports listings from Etsy and plans to expand to Shopify merchants soon.

At the core of this system lies the Agentic Commerce Protocol – a new, open-source standard co-developed with payment processor Stripe. The protocol manages the full transaction flow — from product discovery to payment confirmation — while merchants handle order fulfilment and customer support.

With over 700 million weekly users, ChatGPT is fast evolving into a personal shopping assistant, guiding users through a complete buying experience inside the chat interface.

What the Partnership Means for Merchants and Consumers

Under the agreement, PayPal will manage key backend operations, including merchant routing, payment verification, and transaction security. This ensures that both merchants and consumers benefit from PayPal’s trusted network and fraud prevention systems.

Chriss noted that the integration brings together “the largest merchant network in the world” with a massive base of verified PayPal users — offering a safe, efficient, and familiar payment experience. Users will be able to pay using linked bank accounts, credit cards, or their PayPal balances, with added protections such as dispute resolution and package tracking.

Shaping the Future of Digital Commerce

The partnership underscores PayPal’s ambition to be the backbone of AI-powered commerce, positioning itself as a bridge between merchants, consumers, and emerging AI ecosystems.

Beyond payments, PayPal has begun adopting OpenAI’s enterprise tools internally to enhance its own innovation and accelerate product development cycles.

As artificial intelligence continues to shape the future of online shopping, the collaboration between PayPal and OpenAI signals a defining moment in the evolution of digital payments — one that blends trust, intelligence, and convenience into a single, conversational shopping experience.
