The Osahon Okunbo Foundation has strengthened Nigeria’s presence on the global cultural stage by serving as the official sponsor of the Nigeria Spotlight at the 17th edition of Abu Dhabi Art 2025, held from November 19 to 23.
The sponsorship was carried out in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy.
Through this collaboration, the Foundation supported eight Nigerian galleries, pushing forward its mission to promote African creativity internationally. This year’s fair featured more than 140 galleries from 37 countries, making it the largest edition so far and the final instalment before the event transitions into Frieze Abu Dhabi. The moment marks a symbolic shift as Nigeria’s creative voice gains more visibility while the fair enters a new chapter.
The Nigeria Spotlight featured contributions from kò, SOTO Gallery, O’DA Gallery, AMG Projects, 1897 Gallery, Windsor Gallery, and Ishara Gallery. It also included a special project led by MADhouse x Tikera Africa. Together, the galleries presented a wide range of contemporary Nigerian art that explored themes of identity, memory, spirituality, politics, and evolving forms of African expression. Their presentation connected historic influences such as the Osogbo School with today’s modern interpretations.
For the Osahon Okunbo Foundation, sponsoring the initiative reflects a deeper commitment to cultural access and representation. “Art is one of the clearest ways a nation tells the truth about itself,” said Osahon Okunbo, Founder of the Foundation. He explained that supporting the Nigeria Spotlight gives Nigerian artists the chance to share their stories globally and engage with new audiences and ideas.
The fair provided a vital platform for curators, collectors, cultural institutions, and stakeholders. With the Foundation’s backing, the participating Nigerian galleries expanded their market opportunities, strengthened international networks, and connected with global audiences at a defining moment for African art.
Honourable Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, said that the collaboration reinforces Nigeria’s cultural relevance worldwide. She noted that the country’s artists continue to reflect the depth and richness of its creative spirit.
