Nigeria has taken a bold step forward in medical innovation with the introduction of its first robotic surgery platform at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja.<\/p>\n
The system, called Toumai, meaning \u201cHope of Life,\u201d is the first of its kind in West Africa and marks a turning point for advanced surgical care in the region.<\/p>\n
The platform is the product of a partnership between Nisa Medical Group and U.S.-based Robomed Global. Both organisations say the goal is to expand access to specialised, minimally invasive surgeries and strengthen local capacity to deliver world-class treatment.<\/p>\n
According to Martins Ioha, Corporate Communications Officer at Robomed Global USA, the launch represents the start of a new chapter for clinical precision and patient safety. He noted that the system is expected to make a strong impact in fields such as urology, gynaecology, and surgical oncology, where accuracy and reduced recovery time are critical.<\/p>\n
The partnership goes beyond deploying new technology. It includes a structured training programme for Nigerian and African surgeons to build expertise in robotic procedures. Plans also cover certification for medical personnel and better systems integration to support safer and more efficient operating theatres.<\/p>\n
Dr. Obi Ekwenna, Chief Executive Officer of Robomed, said that the achievement signals meaningful progress for Nigeria\u2019s healthcare sector as it boosts local skill and empowers specialists to take on complex procedures with confidence.<\/p>\n
Also speaking, Dr. Iyore James, Chief Medical Officer, stated that the mission is as much about people as it is about technology. He explained that the organisation aims to help surgeons, nurses, and biomedical engineers across Africa reach global performance standards.<\/p>\n
Mrs. Efosa Eluma, Chief Operations Officer, highlighted the company\u2019s focus on operational excellence, stressing that the vision is to develop a sustainable pathway for robotic surgery throughout the sub-region.<\/p>\n
For Nisa Medical Group, the milestone carries long-term benefits. Renowned fertility expert, Dr. Ibrahim Wada, said that the initiative would strengthen Nigeria\u2019s standing as a hub for advanced surgery and reduce the need for medical tourism.
