The federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to electric vehicle adoption and clean transportation as part of a broader strategy to modernise the transport sector, accelerate industrialisation and support the country’s energy transition agenda. Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Electric Vehicle Association of Nigeria (EVAMAN) in Abuja, government officials and industry stakeholders outlined plans to strengthen collaboration across policy, technology, manufacturing and infrastructure development. The initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic modernisation agenda and seeks to position Nigeria within Africa’s emerging electric mobility market.<\/p>\n

Government is increasingly treating electric mobility not merely as a transportation policy but as an industrial development strategy capable of stimulating manufacturing, technology innovation, renewable energy integration and investment attraction.<\/p>\n

The significance of the Abuja meeting lies in the government’s effort to frame electric vehicles as an economic opportunity rather than solely an environmental obligation.<\/p>\n

Historically, discussions around electric mobility in Nigeria have focused on climate goals and emissions reduction. The latest policy messaging broadens the conversation to include industrial competitiveness, technology transfer, employment generation and local value-chain development.<\/p>\n

Princess Zahrah Audu, Director-General (DG) of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), linked electric mobility directly to economic transformation.<\/p>\n

According to Audu, “Around the world, electric mobility is transforming economies, creating new industries, generating jobs, attracting investments, and accelerating technological advancement.”<\/p>\n

Her comments suggest that policymakers increasingly view electric mobility as part of a wider industrial ecosystem encompassing vehicle assembly, battery technology, charging infrastructure, software systems, renewable energy and logistics services.<\/p>\n

The intervention by Kingsley Udeh, Honourabe Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, represented by Dr Ibiam Oguejiofor, National Coordinator of the Strategy Implementation Task Force for Presidential Executive Order, reinforced this perspective. Udeh argued that technological advancement remains central to economic competitiveness and that Nigeria’s transition will require coordinated planning, financing and innovation.<\/p>\n

The involvement of EVAMAN also reflects a shift towards industry-led implementation. According to Mustapha Audu, Chairman of EVAMAN, the association has already established collaboration with the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN).<\/p>\n

However, the sector remains at an early stage of development. Stakeholders acknowledged persistent challenges, including inadequate charging infrastructure, limited financing, regulatory uncertainty and weak domestic manufacturing capacity.<\/p>\n

Consequently, the success of Nigeria’s electric mobility ambitions will depend less on vehicle adoption targets and more on whether supporting industrial ecosystems emerge around manufacturing, energy systems, technology services and infrastructure deployment.<\/p>\n
