At the recent opening of the 2026 Korea-Africa Business Forum, Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, Wamkele Mene, called for deeper trade, investment and industrial partnerships between Africa and the Republic of Korea. Addressing government officials, investors and business leaders, Mene argued that Africa’s integrated market of 1.4 billion people, expanding regional value chains and AfCFTA investment reforms are creating new opportunities across automotive manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, critical minerals beneficiation and digital trade. He emphasised that the AfCFTA Protocols on Investment and Digital Trade are improving market certainty, investor protection and cross-border business opportunities.<\/p>\n

The AfCFTA Secretariat is actively repositioning Africa from a development-assistance destination to an investment-led industrialisation partner for Korean businesses.<\/p>\n

Mene’s intervention reflects a broader evolution in Africa’s external economic strategy. Rather than focusing primarily on aid, the continent is increasingly presenting itself as a unified investment destination capable of supporting large-scale manufacturing, technology deployment and value-added production.<\/p>\n

The significance of the AfCFTA lies in its ability to aggregate fragmented national markets into a larger commercial platform. For Korean investors, this potentially reduces market-entry complexity and improves scale economics across multiple jurisdictions.<\/p>\n

The emphasis on critical minerals beneficiation is particularly notable. Africa appears increasingly determined to capture greater value from mineral resources through local processing and industrialisation rather than remaining a supplier of raw materials.<\/p>\n

The focus on digital trade and investment protocols also signals recognition that regulatory predictability is becoming as important as market size in attracting foreign capital. The message to investors is that market integration is being accompanied by institutional reforms designed to improve commercial confidence.<\/p>\n

Mene said: \u201cAfrica’s integrated market of 1.4 billion people and growing regional value chains present compelling opportunities for Korean businesses. The AfCFTA Protocols on Investment and Digital Trade are creating greater certainty, predictability and market access for investors.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAfrica is open for business and ready to work with Korea to unlock mutually beneficial trade and investment opportunities that drive industrialisation, create jobs and deliver shared prosperity,\u201d he also said.<\/p>\n
