The Managing Director of PlutusNeo by Afrinvest, Dr. Ayodeji Ebo, has stated that Nigeria’s Treasury Bills Primary Market Auction of 3 June 2026 closed with strong investor demand, particularly for the 364-day instrument, as investors sought to lock in attractive yields amid prevailing market conditions. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) offered N1 trillion across three maturities, comprising N100 billion each for the 91-day and 182-day bills and N800 billion for the 364-day bill. Total subscriptions reached over N2.16 trillion, with the one-year bill attracting N1.95 trillion in bids. Stop rates increased across all tenors, with the 364-day bill closing at 16.35 percent and delivering a true yield of 19.55 percent.<\/p>\n

Ebo stated: \u201cThe latest Treasury Bills auction closed with strong demand, especially on the 364-day paper, as investors continued to lock in attractive yields. The 364-day bill continues to stand out for investors looking to lock in returns close to 20 percent on an annualised basis.\u201d<\/p>\n

The most notable outcome was the overwhelming demand for the 364-day bill. Subscription levels exceeded the offer size by more than two times, indicating that institutional and high-net-worth investors continue to prioritise yield certainty and sovereign-backed instruments.<\/p>\n

The increase in stop rates across all maturities also suggests that the authorities remain willing to accommodate market expectations for higher returns while sustaining robust demand for government debt instruments.<\/p>\n

From a monetary perspective, the auction reflects the continued effectiveness of tight financial conditions in attracting liquidity into government securities. The result is a market environment where fixed-income instruments continue competing strongly against riskier asset classes.<\/p>\n

The broader implication is that Nigeria’s debt market remains highly liquid and capable of absorbing substantial issuance volumes without significant demand weakness.<\/p>\n
