The federal government has approved N32,880,443,906.25 billion for the second quarter of 2026 under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) to sustain primary healthcare delivery nationwide. The approval was recently announced in Abuja by Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, during the 15th Ministerial Oversight Committee (MOC) meeting. Pate disclosed that cumulative disbursements under the BHCPF have reached N290 billion, while the committee approved modalities for private sector participation within the oversight framework, directed all 36 states to meet counterpart funding and equity fund obligations, and reaffirmed reforms aimed at improving governance, accountability, financing sustainability, emergency preparedness and progress towards Universal Health Coverage. He said: “The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare remains committed to ensuring efficient utilisation of public health resources and delivering equitable, affordable, and quality healthcare services for all Nigerians.”<\/p>\n

The discussions on emergency preparedness, molecular diagnostic laboratories and isolation centres further indicate that recent public health experiences continue to influence health sector priorities. Rather than treating emergency response as a separate agenda, government appears to be integrating preparedness into routine health system strengthening.<\/p>\n

However, the long-term effectiveness of these reforms will depend less on the size of quarterly allocations than on consistent implementation, stronger intergovernmental coordination and measurable improvements in service delivery outcomes.<\/p>\n
