The Government of Niger State has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, through NNPC Gas Marketing Limited, to develop and implement a Gas Master Plan aimed at accelerating industrialisation and gas commercialisation along the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline corridor. The agreement was signed at the AKK and Energy Business Development Forum at the Government House, Minna. Umaru Bago, Governor of Niger State, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, Group Chief Executive Officer of the NNPC, represented by Olalekan Ogunleye, Executive Vice President, Gas, Power and New Energy, and Audu Ibrahim, Managing Director of the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company, said that the initiative would strengthen industrial investment, improve gas utilisation and expand economic opportunities across the state.<\/p>\n

Niger State is repositioning gas infrastructure from a transit asset into an industrial development platform through strategic planning and investment partnerships with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.<\/p>\n

The MoU signals a shift from pipeline construction towards industrial ecosystem development. Rather than viewing the AKK Gas Pipeline solely as an energy transportation project, Niger State is seeking to leverage its route to attract manufacturing, agro-processing and hydrocarbon-based investments capable of expanding the state’s productive economy.<\/p>\n

Governor Bago described the agreement as “a major milestone for both Niger State and Nigeria,” expressing confidence that it would transform the state’s industrial landscape and stimulate economic growth.<\/p>\n

Bago commended the NNPC for incorporating Niger State into the project, noting that it would create opportunities for agro-allied industries, fertiliser plants and hydrocarbon-based businesses, while complementing the state’s hydroelectric and solar energy resources.<\/p>\n

He further announced that the entire stretch of the AKK Gas Pipeline route within Niger State has been designated an Industrial Development Zone, adding that the corridor would be gazetted to attract domestic and international investors and increase the state’s Gross Domestic Product through new investments and job creation.<\/p>\n

Ogunleye said that the company remains committed to maximising the economic benefits of the AKK Gas Pipeline for the people of Niger State, describing the state as a strategic energy hub.<\/p>\n

Managing Director of the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company, Audu Ibrahim, said that construction of the pipeline is progressing steadily and expressed optimism that the project would significantly improve gas supply to industries and businesses upon completion.<\/p>\n

The engagement demonstrates increasing collaboration between sub-national governments and the NNPC to convert national energy infrastructure into regional industrial growth corridors.<\/p>\n

On behalf of the traditional institution, the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, commended the Federal Government for the initiative and reaffirmed the support of traditional rulers for the successful implementation of the project<\/p>\n
