Despite rising geopolitical tensions, tariff disputes and growing policy uncertainty, the global trading system remains firmly anchored in multilateral rules. According to World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, 72 percent of global goods trade still flows under WTO rules, while another 16 percent is conducted through regional and bilateral agreements built on the organisation’s framework. Speaking at the 7th Africa Emerging Markets Forum in Abuja, she argued that countries are responding to global disruptions by diversifying trade relationships rather than retreating into protectionism, reinforcing the resilience of rules-based commerce.<\/p>\n

Okonjo-Iweala’s intervention reframes current geopolitical tensions as a test of resilience rather than a breakdown of the multilateral trading system, asserting that rules-based commerce continues to underpin the overwhelming majority of global trade flows.<\/p>\n

The significance of the WTO’s latest assessment lies less in headline trade growth than in the institutional resilience it reveals. While tariff disputes, geopolitical fragmentation and supply chain disruptions dominate global discourse, actual trade behaviour continues to favour established multilateral rules.<\/p>\n

“Around 72 per cent of global goods trade continues to flow on core WTO most-favoured-nation tariffs,” Okonjo-Iweala said, adding that “an additional 16 per cent goes on terms within the wider WTO framework, mostly tariff preferences arising from bilateral and regional trade agreements that are built on WTO foundations.”<\/p>\n

Her assessment suggests that governments are increasingly diversifying supply routes and trading partnerships without abandoning the global rulebook. The rapid expansion of South-South trade and regional agreements also indicates that developing economies are deepening integration through institutions rather than replacing them. For Africa, the implication is that competitiveness will depend increasingly on productive capacity, logistics efficiency and compliance with international trade standards rather than expectations of a fragmented global market.<\/p>\n
