The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has launched the Renewed Hope Seed Support Programme in Dutse, Jigawa State, to help farmers recover planting opportunities lost to dry spells. The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the intervention and directed that certified seeds reach affected farmers within the remaining planting window. Each beneficiary state will receive 32 metric tonnes of cowpea, nine metric tonnes of groundnut and 8.35 metric tonnes of sesame seeds, with about 4,935 smallholder households targeted in Jigawa.<\/p>\n

The intervention is structured around time-sensitive crop recovery rather than general farm support, using short-duration, improved varieties that can mature within the remaining rainy season.<\/p>\n

The significance of the programme lies in its timing. Dry spells can turn a planting-season disruption into a full production loss if farmers miss the window for replanting. By directing certified inputs towards crops capable of maturing within the remaining rainfall period, the Federal Government is attempting to preserve part of the season rather than compensate for its failure after harvest.<\/p>\n

Kyari stressed that implementation speed is central to the intervention: \u201cMr President, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved this intervention and directed that it reach affected farmers inside the planting window. That instruction is the whole difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

The choice of cowpea, groundnut and sesame also gives the programme an economic logic. Their shorter production cycles create a narrower but potentially viable route for farmers to recover output within the remaining season. The effectiveness of the intervention, however, will depend less on the announcement than on how quickly seeds reach farms and whether farmers have sufficient moisture, extension support and other inputs to establish the crops.<\/p>\n

Jigawa provides an important implementation setting. Kyari said: \u201cJigawa does not treat agriculture as a department of government. This state treats it as the economy, because it is the economy.\u201d The state government’s investments in irrigation, mechanisation, extension services and improved inputs could strengthen the transmission of federal seed support into actual production.<\/p>\n

Quality control is another critical variable. National Agricultural Seeds Council Director-General Fatuhu Mohammed said the council would rely on seed certification, quality assurance, variety registration, laboratory testing and regulatory enforcement. This matters because emergency input distribution can have limited value if planting materials are poor quality or unsuitable for the targeted production environment.<\/p>\n

The intervention therefore represents a narrow but important policy response to a specific agricultural disruption. Its success should be measured by the acreage replanted, seed delivery speed, crop establishment and eventual output, rather than by the volume of seeds distributed alone.<\/p>\n
