Nigeria and Hungary have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at deepening collaboration in water management, innovation, and climate resilience, marking a renewed commitment to tackling Nigeria\u2019s growing water-related challenges.<\/p>\n
The agreement, formalized between the Budapest University of Technology and Economics and Nigeria\u2019s National Water Resources Institute (NWRI) in Kaduna, was one of the major highlights of the Nigeria\u2013Hungary Water Forum held in Abuja recently.<\/p>\n
The forum brought together government officials, engineers, researchers, and policy experts to explore sustainable solutions in water resource management and strengthen bilateral relations through technical and academic cooperation.<\/p>\n
Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, described the pact as a strategic milestone in building Nigeria\u2019s capacity for modern water management. He noted that the initiative would foster joint research on water security, advanced training for engineers, and expertise exchange in flood control and basin management.<\/p>\n
Prof. Utsev explained that the collaboration builds on a previous 2016 MoU between both countries, reinforcing their shared commitment to knowledge transfer and technology development in the water sector.<\/p>\n
Highlighting Nigeria\u2019s mounting water challenges driven by rapid urbanisation, population growth, and climate change. He said that the partnership aligns with President Bola Tinubu\u2019s Renewed Hope Agenda, which identifies water security and sanitation as critical pillars of national development and poverty reduction.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe cooperation with Hungary will complement Nigeria\u2019s ongoing initiatives such as the River Basin Revitalisation Programme and flood control projects along the River Niger and other major basins,\u201d Prof Utsev said. He stated that Hungary\u2019s experience in wastewater treatment, flood management, and water engineering would enhance Nigeria\u2019s drive to modernise its water infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Hungarian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. L\u00f3r\u00e1nd Endreffy, described the forum as a milestone in bilateral relations, pledging Hungary\u2019s continued support to Nigeria\u2019s water sector transformation.<\/p>\n
He commended Nigeria\u2019s determination to pursue long-term, innovative solutions to its water challenges and affirmed that Hungary\u2019s advanced technologies in water infrastructure and treatment systems would complement these efforts.<\/p>\n
The Nigeria\u2013Hungary Water Forum also featured technical sessions, case studies, and research presentations from universities and national agencies on flood control, rural water supply, and climate adaptation strategies.<\/p>\n
