The NNPC and Renaissance Joint Venture has donated 300,000 dollars to the National Hospital, Abuja, to support the maintenance of its cancer treatment equipment.
The hospital uses a state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator Radiotherapy Machine, which the JV first donated in 2019 as part of a wide Corporate Social Responsibility initiative.
The LINAC machine has since transformed cancer care at the hospital. It has treated more than 2,000 patients, cut treatment costs by about 80 percent and reduced the average therapy session from 12 minutes to just 2 minutes. The JV has also subsidised care for indigent patients, with 712 of them receiving discounted treatment ranging from 25 percent to 100 percent.
Speaking recently in Abuja, Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services, Oluwaseyi Omotowa, said that regular maintenance remains crucial for the machine to continue operating at full capacity.
Omotowa, who was represented by Head of Business Services at NNPC-NUIMS, Nkechi Anaedobe, said that the donation would help prevent delays in treatment and ensure the machine remains available when patients need it most.
He noted that the support would help the hospital stay compliant with global medical standards, sharpen calibration accuracy, and maintain the level of precision needed for effective radiotherapy treatment.
Omotowa said that the NNPC and Renaissance JV plans to build on the partnership to support more healthcare improvements across the country. He noted that the goal is not only to treat illnesses but to strengthen the foundation of Nigeria’s healthcare system.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammed Ali Pate, commended the gesture and urged other industry players to emulate it. He said that the intervention fits into the government’s plan to upgrade critical health infrastructure and expand access to quality and affordable care.
The Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, Muhammad Raji Mahmud, described the donation as a lifeline for thousands of patients who depend on the hospital each year. He said that the LINAC machine has helped strengthen local cancer care and reduced the need for medical treatment abroad.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Renaissance Africa Energy Company, Tony Attah, said that the support reflects the company’s commitment to sustainable healthcare and national development. He also said that the project is a strategic investment in the well-being of Nigerians and in the resilience of the country’s health system.
The donation marks another step in ongoing efforts to expand cancer treatment capacity in Nigeria and improve outcomes for patients across the country.
