Elektron Energy has unveiled Victoria Island Power (VIPL), a 40-megawatt embedded power network designed to provide dedicated electricity to businesses in one of Lagos’ major commercial districts.
The project has now moved into the customer-engagement phase, with businesses and other stakeholders given access to the facility and technical briefings ahead of commissioning.
Developed in collaboration with Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) and under a licence from the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), the project represents an attempt to address a persistent constraint on commercial activity in Victoria Island: the gap between grid reliability and the high cost of self-generation.
DEVELOPMENT:
Elektron Energy hosted its Victoria Island Power Customer Experience Day, giving prospective customers and business leaders an opportunity to inspect the infrastructure and receive technical details on the generation and distribution network.
The VIPL model combines embedded generation with distribution infrastructure, allowing electricity to be supplied directly to businesses across Victoria Island.
Ayomide Oladapo, Executive Director, Business Development, Elektron Energy, said that the project was designed around the operational problems created by unreliable grid supply and dependence on self-generation.
“For years, businesses in Victoria Island have had to operate within the constraints of unreliable power, either absorbing the cost and complexity of self-generation or navigating the uncertainty of the grid,” he said.
“Neither model provides the predictability businesses need to plan, invest and grow with confidence.
“Victoria Island Power changes that equation. By delivering clean, dedicated, professionally managed electricity infrastructure, we are giving businesses access to reliable power without the burden of fuel logistics, generator maintenance or operational disruption.”
The 40MW facility will deploy Wärtsilä engine technology, while the project’s distribution infrastructure is designed to deliver the generated electricity directly to participating businesses.
Mika Gummerus, Site Manager, Energy Services & Upgrade, Wärtsilä, said that the project demonstrates the value of combining engineering expertise with long-term infrastructure planning.
“Victoria Island Power shows what happens when the right technical expertise, infrastructure and long-term planning come together,” he said.
NUMBERS:
The headline capacity is 40MW.
That is the amount of embedded generation the VIPL project is designed to provide to businesses across Victoria Island, although the source material does not disclose expected initial demand, customer numbers, tariff levels or the project’s capital cost.
The more important commercial metric will therefore be utilisation. The ability to convert 40MW of installed capacity into dependable electricity supply and paying customer demand will determine the project’s economic performance.
The project also combines two infrastructure functions, generation and distribution, creating a more integrated supply model than simply adding generation capacity to the existing power system.
SIGNIFICANCE:
For businesses, electricity reliability is an operating-cost and investment variable, not merely a utility issue.
Unpredictable grid supply forces commercial users to maintain alternative generation capacity, procure fuel, manage equipment maintenance and absorb downtime. VIPL is attempting to convert those fragmented costs into a professionally managed electricity service.
That changes the proposition from simply selling power to selling predictability.
The project is also significant from an infrastructure perspective because it demonstrates how embedded generation can be deployed within a defined commercial cluster, with generation and distribution structured around the needs of identified customers.
The participation of EKEDC and regulatory backing from LASERC are equally important. They place the project within the evolving framework for private and embedded electricity supply rather than positioning it as an isolated off-grid installation.
NEXT MOVE:
The immediate watchpoint is commissioning and the transition from demonstration to commercial operations.
The market should watch how quickly customers are connected, the proportion of the 40MW capacity that is contracted and utilised, the reliability delivered in actual operations and the economics of the resulting power supply.
Tariff competitiveness will also matter. Businesses will ultimately compare VIPL’s cost and reliability against a combination of grid electricity and self-generation.
The project’s ability to maintain dependable supply at scale will be the critical test of whether the embedded model can become a commercially viable alternative for other high-density business districts.
OUR LENS:
The deeper signal is that Nigeria’s electricity market is increasingly creating value around reliability, not simply generation.
Adding megawatts to the national system is important, but for a commercial district such as Victoria Island, the immediate economic problem is whether businesses can obtain predictable electricity at a cost that supports productive activity.
VIPL is therefore testing a more targeted infrastructure model: identify concentrated demand, build dedicated generation and distribution around it, and sell reliability as an integrated service.
If the model delivers the promised combination of reliability, operational simplicity and commercially acceptable pricing, its significance could extend beyond Victoria Island.
The real test is whether 40MW can become more than installed capacity. It must become dependable commercial power, sustained by customer demand and viable project economics. If that happens, embedded power could evolve from a workaround for Nigeria’s electricity constraints into a more deliberate infrastructure model for powering the country’s major commercial clusters.
