Ikeja Electric Plc has commenced refunds to customers who previously paid for electricity meters under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) programme, putting customer reimbursement and service accountability at the centre of its latest stakeholder engagement.

DEVELOPMENT:

Ikeja Electric announced the refunds during its September virtual stakeholder engagement, a monthly platform for providing operational updates, educating customers and addressing service concerns.

Eligible customers will receive refunds through credits applied to their vending transactions over the approved refund period.

The company said that customers can track their refund status online using their meter or account numbers.

“Customers can monitor their refund status online using their meter number or account number. The refund dashboard provides details including the meter cost, refund count, monthly refund amount, total refund received and last refund date, as well as the applicable refund token sent to the customer’s registered phone number or email address,” Ikeja Electric said.

Customers with concerns were advised to use the company’s official complaint channels or visit the nearest undertaking office.

DATA:

The refund process creates a defined mechanism for returning eligible MAP payments through electricity vending credits rather than direct cash payments.

The company’s dashboard is designed to provide customers with transaction-level information, including the original meter cost, number and value of refunds received and the date of the latest refund.

The development also highlights a second operational issue: electricity infrastructure safety.

SIGNIFICANCE:

For customers, the refund programme provides greater visibility over money previously paid for metering. For Ikeja Electric, transparent tracking and accessible complaint channels will be important to customer confidence.

Olaniyi Olayiwola, Head, Quality, Health, Safety & Environment, also warned customers against unsafe interventions on the company’s network, following incidents involving people attempting unauthorised electrical work.

“Please do not engage electricians to climb Ikeja Electric poles. If you see someone carrying out unsafe activities around our infrastructure, kindly report to us,” Olayiwola said.

He urged communities to maintain adequate clearance around high-voltage lines and avoid encroachment on electricity infrastructure.

Kingsley Okotie, Head of Corporate Communications, stressed the importance of reliable customer communication.

“Our engagement with customers goes beyond providing information. It is about ensuring that our customers have the knowledge and channels they need to stay safe, seek assistance and get their concerns properly addressed,” Okotie said.

NEXT MOVE:

Customers should monitor their vending accounts and the refund dashboard, while Ikeja Electric’s complaint channels will be important for resolving discrepancies.

The company’s handling of safety reports, infrastructure encroachment and unauthorised electrical activities also warrants attention.

OUR LENS:

The meter refunds go beyond reimbursement. They place customer transparency, traceability and service accountability within the electricity distribution relationship.

For Ikeja Electric, the effectiveness of the programme will depend not only on issuing refunds, but on whether customers can easily verify what they are owed, understand the process and obtain timely resolution when problems arise.
