MTN Nigeria has crossed the 100 million-subscriber threshold, marking a major recovery in the telecom market after the NIN-SIM verification exercise triggered a sharp contraction in active lines.
DEVELOPMENT: Data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) showed MTN’s customer base rose to a record 100.86 million in July from 98.64 million in June, adding 2.22 million subscribers in one month.
The milestone makes MTN the first telecommunications operator in Africa to surpass 100 million subscribers. The growth comes as operators rebuild customer bases following the disconnection of lines that failed to meet identity-verification requirements.
DATA: Nigeria’s total active mobile subscriptions increased by 2.88 million to 195.11 million in July from 192.23 million in June, a 1.5 percent monthly rise.
MTN accounted for about 51.7 percent of active subscriptions, followed by Airtel with 66.76 million, Globacom with 23.63 million and 9mobile with 3.61 million.
Despite the recovery, the market remains below its pre-NIN-SIM levels. Active subscriptions reached about 207.6 million in October 2020 and 214.35 million in October 2022.
SIGNIFICANCE: MTN’s 100 million scale strengthens its position in Nigeria’s digital economy, where mobile networks remain the principal gateway to voice, data and digital financial services.
For investors, the expansion also reinforces the value of scale in monetising Nigeria’s growing demand for connectivity and digital services. MTN’s market share gives it a significant platform from which to capture incremental growth as the broader market recovers.
NEXT MOVE: The key indicators will be whether Nigeria’s total subscriber base continues to move towards its previous highs and whether MTN can translate subscriber growth into stronger data consumption, digital-service adoption and revenue growth.
OUR LENS: The 100 million milestone is more than a subscriber record. It demonstrates the speed at which Nigeria’s telecom market can rebuild after a regulatory-induced contraction. MTN has emerged from that disruption with greater scale, but the larger investment question is whether subscriber growth can now translate into deeper digital penetration and higher value per customer.
