The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) Nigeria is deepening its regulatory engagement in the United Kingdom, with discussions spanning digital reporting, Artificial Intelligence, sustainability reporting and the development of Nigeria’s actuarial profession.

DEVELOPMENT:
Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of FRC Nigeria, Mr. Rabiu Olowo, led a delegation to the Financial Reporting Council UK in London from 22 to 24 September 2026.

The delegation was received by Richard Moriarty, Chief Executive Officer of FRC UK, and Vinita Hill, Chief Operating Officer of FRC UK.

Discussions covered emerging developments in digital reporting, the application of AI in corporate reporting and audit, the UK’s evolving sustainability reporting framework, as well as FRC UK’s regulatory approach and oversight practices.

Separately, FRC Nigeria met the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) in London on 22 September as part of its UK engagements under the Nigeria-UK Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership.

DATA:
The actuarial engagement focused on deepening actuarial practice and regulation in Nigeria, growing the pool of qualified actuaries and building a stronger talent pipeline through collaboration between regulators and industry.

The broader UK engagement is taking place over three days, from 22 to 24 September 2026. No financial commitments or specific implementation targets were disclosed.

SIGNIFICANCE:
The engagements widen the regulatory conversation beyond conventional financial reporting. Digital reporting, AI, sustainability disclosures and actuarial capacity all affect the quality of information available to companies, investors, regulators and other financial-system participants.

For Nigeria, strengthening actuarial capacity also matters to the credibility of financial reporting and risk assessment, particularly where specialised expertise is required to support sound financial information and public confidence.

NEXT MOVE:
The key issue is how the knowledge and relationships developed in London translate into Nigerian regulatory practice.

The actuarial discussions provide a potential pathway for collaboration between FRC Nigeria, industry and professional institutions to increase the supply of qualified actuaries and strengthen the profession’s regulatory architecture.

FRC Nigeria and FRC UK are also continuing their collaboration through international engagements under the UK-Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership.

OUR LENS:
The deeper view is regulatory capacity. Nigeria’s reporting ecosystem is confronting several changes simultaneously: digitalisation, AI-assisted reporting and audit, sustainability disclosure requirements and the need for stronger specialist actuarial expertise.

The FRC’s engagement with Richard Moriarty and Vinita Hill addresses the institutional and reporting side of that transition, while its meeting with IFoA addresses the human-capital and professional-capacity side.

The FRC has stated that it remains committed to building a robust actuarial profession that supports credible financial reporting and public confidence in Nigeria’s financial system.

Taken together, the engagements suggest that regulatory effectiveness will increasingly depend not only on rules, but also on technology, specialised talent, professional standards and international regulatory cooperation.
