The federal government is intensifying efforts to attract German industrial investment, with 14 leading German companies exploring opportunities across Nigeria’s cement, mining, construction and industrial technology sectors.

The engagements formed part of the Germany-Nigeria Industrial Technology Conference, ‘Business Meets Nigeria’, held in Abuja, as Nigeria seeks to convert its longstanding relationship with Germany into productive investment and technology partnerships.

DEVELOPMENT

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Mr. Abubakar Bagudu, said that Nigeria was seeking to translate bilateral relations with Germany into concrete investments, technology transfers and industrial partnerships capable of strengthening productive capacity and competitiveness.

Bagudu identified manufacturing, mining, construction, infrastructure, industrial technology, equipment and processing as areas of opportunity as Nigeria pursues its ambition of becoming a $1trillion economy by 2030.

He said that achieving the target would require substantial private-sector participation, increased domestic value addition and greater investment in productive sectors.

DATA

The German mission comprises 14 companies operating across cement, mining, construction and industrial technology. The federal government also highlighted Germany’s €300 million export credit guarantee framework as part of the expanding economic relationship.

The conference was hosted by the German Engineering Federation, VDMA, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Nigeria.

SIGNIFICANCE

The engagement places industrial technology and financing at the centre of Nigeria’s investment proposition. Bagudu highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, which he said were designed to remove structural distortions, improve the investment environment and restore private-sector confidence.

The minister said the government’s objective was to create an economy where private enterprises could “invest, expand productive capacity, generate jobs and create value.”

He also stressed that investment would require bankable, investment-ready projects supported by export credit, development finance, commercial lending and guarantees.

NEXT MOVE

Head of the VDMA delegation, Dr Chux Onaa, said that German machinery and equipment manufacturers could support Nigeria’s industrial development through expertise in materials handling, cement and minerals processing, digitalisation and environmental technologies.

Onaa also reaffirmed VDMA’s commitment to converting the engagements into opportunities for technology transfer, investment and industrial collaboration.

Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Nigeria, Ambassador Johannes Lehne, said that the economic relationship remained strong, adding that Nigeria’s reforms had boosted trade and improved the ease of doing business.

Lehne also highlighted financial instruments available to German and Nigerian companies seeking to deepen private-sector partnerships.

OUR LENS

The deeper proposition is a shift from bilateral relations based largely on trade towards partnerships anchored in production, technology and industrial capacity. For Nigeria, the value of the German engagement will depend on converting expressions of interest into bankable projects, technology transfer and domestic value addition.

The conference therefore places financing, industrial technology and private-sector execution alongside Nigeria’s $1trillion economic ambition.
