The federal government has committed more than N10.5 billion to a new Digital Training Academy (DTA), seeking to turn digital skills development into a pipeline for employment, entrepreneurship and participation in the global digital economy. The academy was officially launched in Abuja on Monday, September 14, 2026.
DEVELOPMENT:
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said that the programme would train 32,000 Nigerians through global learning platforms, including Coursera and Pluralsight, under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).
Training will focus on high-demand fields including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, cybersecurity, cloud computing, software development, IT automation, fintech, product management, natural language processing and quantum computing.
“Our objective here is very clear: to bridge Nigeria’s skills gap, improve employability and enable more of our citizens to take part in the digital economy,” Alausa said.
The programme is designed to connect training and certification with actual economic opportunities. Access centres have also been established nationwide for beneficiaries without personal computers or reliable internet.
Alausa also said that the academy would complement the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme and National Talent Export Programme (NATEP), allowing 3MTT graduates to pursue internationally recognised certifications and helping NATEP connect skilled Nigerians to global opportunities.
“This is how government programmes should work: together, not in silos,” Alausa said.

The academy is targeting 32,000 learners and 32,000 certificates across more than 10 skill areas, with access extending across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Its inaugural cohort consists of 16,000 Nigerians selected from 72,850 applications received between August 17 and September 1. That means only about 22 percent of applicants made the initial cut, indicating substantial demand for subsidised digital-skills training.
The federal government’s commitment of N10.5 billion represents an average planned investment of about N328,000 per targeted learner, although the allocation also covers programme infrastructure and delivery.
SIGNIFICANCE:
The significance lies in whether government can convert skills spending into productive economic capacity. Nigeria’s digital economy requires workers who can serve domestic businesses and compete for international contracts, rather than simply accumulate training certificates.
Alausa made that distinction explicit.
“Today, we’re not merely unveiling an online learning portal. We’re opening a new pathway to opportunities for thousands of Nigerians,” the minister said.
For employers and investors, the programme could expand Nigeria’s pool of digitally skilled labour, particularly in technology-intensive sectors.
NEXT MOVE:
The key test is conversion: how many trainees complete their courses, obtain globally recognised certifications and subsequently secure jobs, launch businesses, win international contracts or improve productivity.
The academy’s linkage with 3MTT and NATEP will also determine whether government is building an integrated talent pipeline or simply adding another training programme.
OUR LENS:
The DTA represents a shift from viewing digital education primarily as access to training towards treating skills as economic infrastructure. The real return on the N10.5 billion commitment will not be measured by certificates issued, but by income generated, businesses created, productivity increased and Nigerian talent exported into the global digital marketplace.
That makes execution, industry linkage and post-training outcomes as important as the training itself.
