OPay is marking eight years of operations in Nigeria, using the milestone to highlight its evolution from a digital payments platform into a broader financial services business serving consumers, merchants and other users.

DEVELOPMENT

Since commencing operations in 2018, OPay has focused on using technology to make financial services more accessible. Its Nigerian operations were built on the acquisition of CBN-licensed Mobile Money Operator, Paycom, and the company now also holds a National MFB licence.

Over eight years, its services have expanded across transfers, airtime and data, bill payments, cards, savings, merchant services, security solutions and other digital financial services.

The company has also committed N1.2 billion over 10 years to scholarships for young Nigerians, alongside programmes focused on youth development, women’s empowerment, skills development and community support.

DATA

The company’s milestone is built around eight years of operations and an expanding digital financial services footprint.

Its customer stories illustrate how the platform is being used for transfers, electricity payments, airtime, data, subscriptions and access to funds.

For Saliu Oluwabukola, her first OPay transfer in 2019 became the beginning of wider usage.

“I trust OPay now with any amount,” she said.

Latifat Ajoke Muftau turned to OPay after being debited by an ATM without receiving her cash. After opening an account, she received the money almost immediately.

“Money just entered. I was like, ah. This is easy,” she recalled.

SIGNIFICANCE

OPay’s eight-year trajectory reflects the broader shift from cash-dependent financial transactions towards digital channels that combine payments with other everyday financial services.

For users such as Dahiru Haruna, the experience also became associated with a sense of technological progress. After using OPay to pay for an ORide trip, he recalled thinking: “Wow, we are progressing. Nigeria is moving with OPay.”

The significance for the financial services ecosystem lies in how payment platforms are increasingly becoming entry points into wider digital financial relationships.

NEXT MOVE

The next phase will centre on continued investment in technology, customer support, security and financial services as digital adoption develops.

OPay will also need to sustain the reliability and accessibility that underpin customer trust while continuing to respond to changing consumer and business needs.

OUR LENS

The deeper story behind OPay’s anniversary is the transition from transactions to financial relationships.

The experiences of Oluwabukola, Haruna and Muftau illustrate different entry points into digital finance, from transfers and bill payments to mobility and emergency access to funds.

OPay’s eight-year journey therefore reflects more than the growth of a payments application. It illustrates how digital platforms can become embedded in everyday economic activity, connecting consumers and businesses to financial services through mobile technology.

Beyond transactions, its N1.2 billion, 10-year scholarship commitment extends the company’s footprint into education and social impact.

Eight years after entering Nigeria, OPay’s central proposition remains the same: using technology to make financial services simpler, more accessible and more inclusive.
